The filter media is a granular food grade adsorbent and is designed to adsorb oil specifically. The granular media doesn't restrict flow on your pump, and when it becomes saturated with oil it continues to work. We recommend you change out the media when the filter is 50% soaked with oil. During certain vacuum pressures light vapor mist may momentarily exit the filter. The filters within the housing, do not have an indefinite life. The unit does require two 240V 30A Single phase circuits, but its now a permanent fixture in or laboratory. Every model will pump out lots of heat for any recovery situation, could you use a 3.5KW heater on a 5 or 10lb unit? Absolutely, Just expect longer times to reach the heaters maximum setting. For example we heated 3x 6"x48" fully jacketed columns to 140°F (heater temp) in about 11 minutes using the 11KW heater. These oil mist filters can be used with any vacuum pump with KF25 or KF40connections. We recommend the 14.1 and 21.2CFM for any vacuum pump up to 24CFM.
