Description
These pre-poured sterile agar petri dishes are ideal for fungal culture observation, sectoring, teaching, and photographic documentation. Each dish contains pre-sterilized potato dextrose agar (PDA) infused with activated carbon, producing a deep black medium that provides exceptional visual contrast.
Black Biochar Agar Plates are designed to make mycelium stand out clearly against the dark background, allowing growers to more easily observe growth patterns, sectoring, and early signs of contamination. This makes them especially useful for learning environments, side-by-side comparisons, and documentation-focused lab work.
Pre-poured agar plates offer many benefits over pouring your own dishes. In addition to convenience, they are also less likely to contaminate your cultures because they are poured in a lab under an industrial-grade flow hood.
Recommended use:
Use Black Biochar Agar Plates for isolation work, morphology comparison, contaminant detection, and educational demonstrations. Activated carbon enhances contrast for observation and photography but does not provide antimicrobial protection.
Storing unused plates
For best results, use plates as soon as possible after receiving them. Store unused plates upright, at room temperature, and away from direct sunlight in the original packaging, preferably in a clean secondary container. (Unused plates can be stored upside down in the refrigerator; however, this may cause condensation on the lid, which can increase contamination risk.)
Storing plates with cultures
Once cultures are added, incubate at room temperature until the new plate is fully covered with mycelium. Once fully colonized, store plates right side up in the refrigerator until ready to use (except for cold sensitive species).
